Muscat

Shopping anyone? by Carol Sherritt

February 10, 2013 by tchistorygal

My husband and I visited Oman in January when the weather is mild and sunny. On our first day our hosts were keen to show us the best of Muscat and we headed to the main commercial area, Mutrah. We strolled along the Corniche, admired the Arabic architecture and thrilled at our first glimpse of an Omani dhow. But the best was yet to come, as we made our way from the glaring brightness into the gloom of Mutrah Souq. It was shopping time anytime, […]

Homewood Suites by the Sacramento, California Airport – A Great Place to Stay

January 23, 2013 by tchistorygal

While we were in Sacramento, we discovered another nice hotel that was quite inexpensive.  Normally we stay at the Hampton Inn Suites near the airport in Sacramento when we go there for meetings.  However V and I were paying for this one, so we shopped around.  I went online and got a Hilton Honors card, and looked up Hilton hotels.  The total for two nights including all the taxes was $225, which started out at about $94 a night compared […]

Book Review: The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony

Book Review: The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony

January 16, 2013 by tchistorygal

This book, The Elephant Whisperer, kept me on the edge of my seat the entire two days it took me to finish it. Considering that I was reading it on my cell phone the whole time because my Kindle needs to be emptied before I can load any more books, it’s amazing that I even stuck it out.   Out of forty-two chapters, there wasn’t a single dud.  I read it because I was intrigued when someone  wrote that when […]

Miles Dean, age 57 riding across America

Book Review: A Black Cowboy’s Ride Across America

December 23, 2012 by tchistorygal

It’s not every day that a good book about both geography and history comes along, but Lisa Winkler’s non-fiction epic, A Black Cowboy’s Ride Across America, guides the reader from New Jersey to California.  Each chapter portrays the real-life adventure of an African-American teacher, Miles Dean, who rides horseback across the United States beginning September 22, 2007.  The mini-biography of Dean spans not only the country, but the centuries of African-American history in various places along the way. There is not […]

Solvang 2012003

Sightseeing in Solvang, CA

November 29, 2012 by tchistorygal

Although Danes from the midwest established Solvang, meaning sunny fields,  in 1911, it did not incorporate until 1985.  I visited it for the first time ten years later as one of my first dates with my husband, V.  In the summer it is just far enough inland that the quaint town suffocates its visitors at temperatures that reach into the 100s.  On a sunny November day, like we had last week, it was perfect.I yelped for a place to eat, […]

Spiky green vegetable. Can you guess what it is?

Weekly Photo Challenge: Green

November 20, 2012 by tchistorygal

We found this at the Pike’s Street Market in Seattle, which is marvelous, by the way.  I had never seen one, so I wondered if some of you green connoisseurs might recognize this interesting vegetable. Here’s the recipe, but somehow I missed the name in the excitement of filling the screen with little Christmas Tree vegetables. So guess away. P.S. I’m not the only one who likes to photograph these exotic veggies.  Click on the link and you will learn what […]

Palm Desert Art Festival

November 15, 2012 by tchistorygal

Most of the time I don’t actually DO anything.  I go places and look at stuff, and I listen to people, and I talk, both verbally and in writing.  Since I met y’all I also take pictures so that you can shadow me as I don’t do anything. When the History Ladies (that’s my friends and I)  got to Palm Desert, Debbie thought I might enjoy walking through the La Quinta art festival.  This is a timely post because if you […]

Road Trip

GMC Motorhome

October 14, 2012 by tchistorygal

My husband and I were just talking about this motor home today, lamenting that we didn’t have any pictures of it.  Yesterday I downloaded all my Tulare County pictures off my portable hard drive, and by George, there were three pictures of the old GMC, Barbie and Ken, motor home. You may have guessed by now that my husband likes almost anything that has four wheels and a motor.  He is particularly drawn to a vehicle that says, “I’m special […]

Embassy Suites in Downey, CA

July 15, 2012 by tchistorygal

I can’t believe I forgot to didn’t take a picture of the beautiful pool!!!  On the front desk as you walk in is a digital picture frame with photos of the hotel, and sure enough, THE POOL flashed up reminding me just as I walked out of the hotel for the last time, of my omission.  So I apologize ahead of time to you my readers and you’ll have to take it by faith that Embassy Suites in beautiful Downey, CA […]

Toy Trains and Other Stuff in the Railroad Museum

June 30, 2012 by tchistorygal

Yesterday I promised you that I would finish the story about the Railroad Museum.  It deserves more than one page anyway.  Think you might like to be a docent?  We had a one hour tour.  The training lasts 55 hours.  Our tour guide, Bob, is a docent trainer. I was surprised to see an entire display about the train control station at Allensworth in the Railroad Museum.   The Santa Fe line, built after the transcontinental railroad was completed, runs north and […]

US Bicycle Hall of Fame 1

Free Wheeling

June 27, 2012 by tchistorygal

When you think about American history, probably the first thought that comes to mind is not the bicycle.  However, in Davis, CA, bicycles are VERY important, so this is the perfect place for the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame.  It is in downtown Davis, at 303 B Street.  Our host, Bob Bowen, was the perfect Bicycles R Us spokesperson! I remember my first bike, well actually it was my mom’s bike, but my dad painted it powder-blue so I would think […]
