Homewood Suites by the Sacramento, California Airport – A Great Place to Stay

January 23, 2013 by tchistorygal

While we were in Sacramento, we discovered another nice hotel that was quite inexpensive.  Normally we stay at the Hampton Inn Suites near the airport in Sacramento when we go there for meetings.  However V and I were paying for this one, so we shopped around.  I went online and got a Hilton Honors card, and looked up Hilton hotels.  The total for two nights including all the taxes was $225, which started out at about $94 a night compared […]

History Girls Rule San Diego Part 1

January 7, 2013 by tchistorygal

Maybe rule is not quite the right word.  Roam might be better.  Manny decided to go along.  He had never been to San Diego. We were both ready to get out of the Tule Fog. By the time we got on the way up over the Grapevine, the fog was almost all gone, and blue skies prevailed. The weather in San Diego amazed me – no rain.  It rains EVERY time I go there.  Ok it rained today when we […]

Seattle Warwick Hotel

November 20, 2012 by tchistorygal

From this downtown Seattle Warwick Hotel handicapped room, I was not hampered from taking a few pictures from the window from my 9th floor room. I like this picture because it almost has a 1950s art look about it.  It was chilly, but not raining the first day of the National Council for Social Studies Conference. You can see the rain spatters on this picture, and I don’t know if they are new or used spatters, but I like what […]

The Working Retired

September 27, 2012 by tchistorygal

I don’t know how to still be likable, and yet admit to you how spoiled I have been – and still am.  I hope you won’t hate me too much.  As a county office employee, I attended three yearly statewide meetings, and represented our region of 5 Central Valley counties sharing ideas and bringing back ideas and information from the other 11 regional leads.  Since my job hasn’t been filled, I had the privilege of short-term employment to attend the […]

Mission Inn, Riverside, California

July 28, 2012 by tchistorygal

Romantic, historic, and definitely NOT obstreperous – even with 1,000 fourth through twelfth grade students and their parents and teachers meandering through the labyrinth corridors. May was definitely the right month to stay here.  The weather was a perfect 80 degrees.  We were Walking in Sunshine, and it felt GOOD! You may wonder how come everything was calm and quiet with hundreds of students going in and out the buildings.  The fact was that these students, far from being obstreperous, were […]

Embassy Suites in Downey, CA

July 15, 2012 by tchistorygal

I can’t believe I forgot to didn’t take a picture of the beautiful pool!!!  On the front desk as you walk in is a digital picture frame with photos of the hotel, and sure enough, THE POOL flashed up reminding me just as I walked out of the hotel for the last time, of my omission.  So I apologize ahead of time to you my readers and you’ll have to take it by faith that Embassy Suites in beautiful Downey, CA […]

University Park Inn & Suites

July 2, 2012 by tchistorygal

Lodging, like rental housing, in university towns are in much demand during part of the year.  Sometimes you can be picky and sometimes you just can’t.  Our travel was paid for out of a federal grant, so we get good rates for nice hotels, but that doesn’t mean that we necessarily choose the locations that are the most expensive hotel in town. This is one of those that I would consider to be somewhere in the middle.  You are not […]

Yes, we relied heavily on our maps, my geographic friends. Only now we had the real space in our brains to go with the map.

2013 CCSS Social Studies on the March in Burlingame

June 1, 2012 by tchistorygal

A good friend once told me that understanding the Civil War starts with understanding the geography.  I found out that the same thing is true of planning a conference.   You can’t plan for 500 extra conference attendees if your rooms can only seat 600.  The CCSS Planning Committee arrived at the Hyatt knowing that we had 10 rooms, but we didn’t know how they would be laid out or how many people could fit in the space.  We just […]
